How to Help a Loved One Quit Smoking

When someone makes a big life change like deciding to quit smoking,

the people closest to them (like you!) can make a huge difference by giving their help and support.

Ending an addiction can be incredibly difficult.  Many people are not even sure what it’s like to go through nicotine withdrawal after quitting smoking, and they may enter this period of time unprepared. It’s definitely not easy to watch a loved one struggle through this experience.  It is natural you’d want to be there for them and do what you can to ensure their success.

You can let your friend know they don’t have to go through it alone by telling them directly or by subtly providing support.

Be a Distraction.

For someone dealing with nicotine cravings, any and all distractions are welcome.

Cravings tend to start off strongly and last anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes.  Be an accessible distraction for your friend by planning activities during the first 2 weeks of them quitting smoking.  Set coffee dates, go for a walk, take a cooking class.

Even better – Plan a trip to reward your friend after they reach a certain time being smoke free!

Count Their Blessings (and yours!)

Sit down with your friend and make a list of all the things in your lives that you’re grateful for.

This is a simple yet powerful way to renew their motivation to quit smoking, and to motivate you as well.

Being open to your friend’s feelings will help to lift their spirits and it will make you feel like you are a part of the solution (you are!).

Provide Other Distractions

It’s unreasonable to assume you are able to dedicate 100% of your time to your loved one.  Your friend may also reject the idea of taking too much of your time.  You have a life, and that’s okay!

When you can’t be around, you can still have a positive influence by occasionally checking in via text, call or email.  Find a portable hobby for your friend, like crossword puzzles or mobile games you can play together.  Keeping their hands busy means keeping their hands away from cigarettes.

Be There for the Long Run.

The journey to becoming smoke free is a long one.

To stay off cigarettes requires a person to make a lifelong commitment to building a healthier life.

Offer to be available via text, phone or email when your friend thinks about picking up a cigarette in the future, even if your geography changes.
